CARE PLAN: CRYPTORCHID SURGERY
AKA: RETAINED TESTICLE SURGERY
Cryptorchid is the medical terminology for a condition where one or both testicles do not descend from the abdomen down into the scrotum properly. This is also known as a retained testicle. Cryptorchid testicles can be located anywhere from inside the abdomen to in the inguinal canal (the opening between the abdomen and the groin), the groin or immediately alongside the penis. Cryptorchidism is a medical problem for patients as the retained testicle can be at a much higher risk of torsion, twisting on itself causing an immense amount of pain, or development of cancer.
The invasiveness of cryptorchid surgery can range significantly from one patient to the next. In some patient's where the testicle is retained in the groin or alongside the penis, the surgical procedure may only require an additional skin incision and a few minutes of additional surgical time versus a traditional castration. In other patient's, where the retained testicle remains in the abdomen, the procedure can be quite involved requiring the opening of the abdominal cavity and a thorough search of the abdomen to find it. Thus the estimated fee range for cryptorchid surgery can vary considerably especially if the veterinarian is unable to palpate (feel) to determine if the testicle is located in the groin or not prior to surgical exploration.
Our veterinary practice surgical protocols for cryptorchid surgeries include our hospital standards of physical examination, blood profile, IV catheter and IV fluids, pre and post operative pain relief, anesthesia, surgical procedure, a bite not or e-collar, pain relief and antibiotics to go home and the post operative follow-up appointment for suture removal.
